The story behind the image

I have always been inspired by the direct flash photography of the ’60s and I wanted to challenge myself to create something similar in camera. As I didn’t have much battery left at this point, I did the best I could in the small amount of time I had. It was also at the end of the coverage so it was more of a “fun shot”.

Directions

Describe how you spoke to your subject(s)

I asked them to sit below the main painting in the room, cross-legged and relaxed. I had the bride hold the bouquet like a baby and for the groom rest his arm behind her neck.

What did you say?

Okay guys, lets have you sit just here and with your legs crossed. Hold the flowers down like a baby and you [groom] can put your arm over her shoulder. Perfect! Look straight into the lens!

Composition

I wanted to explore some of the negative space of the wall, while also keeping in mind to use symmetrical framing (as best as I could). For this, I had the couple sit directly below the painting as the lines formed on the wall and from the painting would naturally frame them.

Focusing

Describe how you spoke to your subject(s)

I simply used the center focus point while using autofocus. There wasn’t anything else to it.

The way the EXIF is written out follows the common photographic method (with the inclusion of White Balance at the end). Here it is broken down:

Shutter Speed @ Aperture ISO White Balance.

Light & Weather

I had the flash directly on the camera, facing towards the couple with relatively strong power output. I didn’t have much battery so we just did the best we could.

Editing Workflow

How did you edit this image?

I used my own custom preset built specifically for flash photography which adjusts the colors and tones to feel a bit more natural, clean, and tidy. I also kept their skin tones in mind by raising the white balance slightly.

Challenges

The place was full of chairs and tables and I had little light and little time to use it.

Solutions

I asked the couple to help me remove the chairs and tables from the spot near the green wall. I already knew what to do.

After this session I felt very confident in exploring these flash references straight to the point, I’ve been using them a lot in weddings and rehearsals.
