Describe how you spoke to your subject(s)

I did the pose myself, showing her exactly how I imagined it. This is always quite funny. Sometimes its just easier to actually show the subject how you would like them to be than to try and verbally explain it.

What did you say?

“Get comfy on the sofa and gently cross your hands above the sofa arm. Give me your dreamiest look, like you’re trying to look into my soul.” ;)

Composition

The composition I went for here put Marisa’s eyes in the center of the image which would immediately connect with the viewer. This gaze was all the focus of the image. I also chose to include a bit more of the environment such as the couch she was laying on as it just gives things a bit more context.

The way the EXIF is written out follows the common photographic method (with the inclusion of White Balance at the end). Here it is broken down:

Shutter Speed @ Aperture ISO White Balance.

Light & Weather

I used a steady light, which was placed behind Marisa – ever so slightly lighting up just one side of her face and her body.
The rest was all natural light, also coming from the white walls that surrounded us.

Editing Workflow

How did you edit this image?

First, I edited this image in Lightroom. After I applied my preset, I adjusted it for a moody yet natural color look.
Then, I imported the image in Photoshop and retouched the skin a bit (with dodge and burn).

Challenges

Only using daylight seemed a bit boring in the test shots.

Solutions

So I brought in my steady light and it worked out great! The rim light on Marisas face is subtle, yet beautiful. It completes the picture.

Try out different poses, because not every pose you see is flattering for your model. Also, to set the mood, let music play that suits the purpose. For this dreamy shoot, I chose Lana del Rey. Of course, your model should also like this music.
