The story behind the image

This wedding was an extra fun bunch that were constantly messing around with each other. That meant that we got to be extra playful with some of our images, hence, this photo of the groomsmen playing around behind the groom. This photo was actually totally spontaneous, and the groomsmen are balancing on a concrete divider behind the groom.

Composition

Since this started as a portrait of just the groom I already had him framed in the center, and once the groomsmen joined in I just liked the center framing to work with the balance of the hands poking out evenly from behind him.

Focusing

Describe how you spoke to your subject(s)

Pretty simple stuff. I focused on the grooms eyes, since this was really a portrait of him, and stuck with that :)

The way the EXIF is written out follows the common photographic method (with the inclusion of White Balance at the end). Here it is broken down:

Shutter Speed @ Aperture ISO White Balance.

Light & Weather

I placed the groom at the entrance of the parking garage to make use of the diffuse light falling only on him, and not the background. As the parking garage obviously has a roof, this prevented a lot of the sunlight from reaching the back – which also meant where I had the groom was quite important.

Editing Workflow

How did you edit this image?

I kept editing quite simple, with exposure, contrast and colour corrections on top of my custom preset, but I also removed the distracting parking garage lights in the background to keep focus on what’s happening in the image.

Even though I was trying to create a portrait of the groom in the moment and could have been annoyed by the groomsmen interrupting it by goofing around, I instead decided to embrace the chaos and capture what was really going on. I encourage any photographer to remind themselves to try to remember to step out of that mindset of “I have to create this perfect shot” and allow yourself to really observe what’s happening and what the dynamic is in the moment. The images will be much more authentic to the couple.
