Vow renewal in the middle of a demonstration at our 4 Elements workshop. There were 35 photographers shooting at intervals. Of which lasted 15 minutes for each team, each team with 5 people. In the last team, we asked the bride to close her eyes and forget about all the photographers and think about everything she was going to experience at Villa Mandacaru.

Josi and Roni renewed their vows, in the middle of a practical class and our biggest challenge was to help them live their moment in truth, even with so many people. But somehow we managed to capture this moment the bride got lost in her emotions; regardless of having a bunch of cameras point at her.

How did you direct your subject(s)?

We asked the bride to close her eyes and think about everything she was going to experience there at the villa, and to think about the vows she will say to her husband.

What did you say?

Josi, I want you to forget about all the people who are here and just feel the moment you are experiencing. I want you to take a deep breath and think about this day in your lives.

How did you compose your image?

We chose this place because it was the darkest in the whole venue, and thus we had the possibility to better control the light that would come in. Since it was a corridor, we were able to use the sides of the doors to be able to make a frame around our bride creating symmetry and leading lines.

How and what did you focus on?

We focused on the bride, simple and easy, because as the light was only on her the contrast was very high, and also she was standing still, which made the focus even easier.

How did you use the light in your image?

One of the things we love to do most is this: window lights! Whenever there is a possibility to use this light, we will! In this case the bride was in a dark corridor, and there were several doors that completely blocked the light, we opened one of these doors a little and adjusted the bride according to the light that was coming in.

Canon RP

Canon EF 50mm f/1.2 L

Shutter Speed

White Balance

How did you edit your image & what did you use?

This photo was edited with our preset, Paraguassu Meraki. This preset is adjusted exactly for this kind of photo, very underexposed with lots of low light. We practically applied the preset and it was ready. A simple tweak of the exposure settings, contrasts and a bit of white balance created this result.

Software Used

Adobe Lightroom Classic

What challenges did you face?

The biggest challenge was to calm the bride down and create that mood in the moment before the first look

How did you solve them?

We put on some quiet music, asked her to dream about what the moment was going to be like, and for her to do just imagine everything with her eyes closed

Can you share any last thoughts or advice?

Whenever you have the time and opportunity with the couple, look for places that allow you to have as much control over the light, because it brings an incredible depth to the photo and brings an amazing result for the bride.
