The story behind the image

This was the first bigger and more elaborate editorial that we did and with many partners that we dreamed of working with. We lived in another state and to receive this invitation to come to São Paulo to do this work with so many super cool people was too special!

We had some particularities in it: it was the first time we directed a couple of models (who, despite being a real couple, already knew how to position themselves and were ‘kind of ready’). For our style of photography, this is complicated because our main objective is to capture the essence of people and not just ready-made poses.

To get to know Villa Mandacaru, this barn… to photograph a NatKat dress and Bohemian decoration was much more than a dream, so we gave our all in this work, trying to see the intimate of each partner and especially of the couple.

Directions

Describe how you spoke to your subject(s)

In general, our direction is very intense and with a lot of movement. The pictures we did before this one were very energetic and this was the moment we simply asked them to stop, breathe, and look at the beautiful place they were in.

What did you say?

I want you to take a break and relax right now, just breathe and feel each other’s presence, look at the beautiful place we are in, and feel it.

Composition

We chose this frame mainly because of the uniqueness of the location. This window is very characteristic of the barn, and as it has a triangle shape on top, we chose to shoot it in portrait. We also like the separation of the inside from the outside, and this location was perfect for this. We decided to put the reflection in the center along with the barn triangle, just to create this contrast and more strength in the photo.

Focusing

Describe how you spoke to your subject(s)

We had a little challenge with the focusing because we chose to focus on a middle ground, between the couple and the reflection, and since the photo is backlit, it was a little difficult to find the focus point.

Light & Weather

Since we were photographing inside the barn and saw a beautiful ray of light near the window on the couple, we decided to shoot very underexposed and looked for an exposure that would enhance the reflection and the outside as well.

Editing Workflow

How did you edit this image?

We edited the image with our preset “Paraguassu Meraki”, and as we always shoot underexposed, it was pretty much done! But since the reflection was not in the center, we also edited it in photoshop to move the reflection to the center for a better composition.

Challenges

Finding a backlight point that could enhance the couple and the location to create an amazing composition.

Solutions

We were able to adjust everything pretty much, but the reflection was not fitting into the composition, so we had to make the change in photoshop.

We may not always have the perfect conditions to create an image that we have in our minds, as was our case, but we should look for opportunities where we can do some manipulation in photoshop to better the composition and always train our eye to be able to find and build strong images.
