This photo means a lot to us! It was the first time we went to a waterfall to photograph and we were able to see the greatness of God and nature, and enabling this couple, this elopement and being able to represent it in a photo, was a gift. I felt like I was now part of all those Instagram accounts we’ve always admired, and that day we had one of the most iconic photos of our work! It was a challenge and a victory.

How did you direct your subject(s)?

As always, we try to have a connection with the couple before any session, and at that moment, it was their day to exchange vows, it was something amazing and they, after exchanging vows, wanted to go near the waterfall just the two of them to have a unique moment for them. The only things we asked was to turn and adjust something regarding how we wanted to use the light.

What did you say?

Guys, this is your moment. When you move up to the waterfall, try to turn yourself into the light. [Groom], always be there with your hand to help [Bride].

How did you compose your image?

We wanted to keep the power of the image by centering the bride in the frame, and draw attention to the waterfall, overlay of her dress on the bottom, and create the idea of movement to make a bigger impact! They were living in the real moment, so we corrected as much as we could without interfering with them by positioning ourselves to get the composition.

How and what did you focus on?

In this photo, as we were with a 16mm, and they were quite far away, we didn’t worry too much about the focus, but we concentrated on focusing on them. Since the image was taken so wide and the couple was quite a distance away, we knew they would be sharp when we moved our focus point over them.

How did you use the light in your image?

As the place is far below the ground level and the waterfall is very high, the sun set very early, so the light was very diffused at this time (as everything was cast in the shadows) and with this type of light, it is much easier to be able to worry only about the composition and the moment.

How did you edit your image & what did you use?

We used our preset for editing, and in this photo, we had to make some adjustments in photoshop to be able to place the waterfall and the bride and groom in the middle. We also used some local adjustments to darken the side of the photo and give strength to the center of the photo.

Software Used

Adobe Lightroom Classic

What challenges did you face?

The challenge was the communication because of the waterfall and the distance, as some small adjustments were needed and we didn’t want to shout too much so as not to disturb their moment.

How did you solve them?

As we are a couple, we made the poses and adjustments that we wanted to demonstrate through mirroring/portraying them on ourselves

Can you share any last thoughts or advice?

Always try to enjoy the day with your couple! This connection is very evident in the photos and makes everything much more fun.
