The story behind the image

This project was a milestone in our lives. Something that we could never have dreamed of, as it was all organized by us! It was supposed to be a simple editorial, but we believed that we could do something big that had never been seen in our city.

For that to make sense, we lived in São Luis do Maranhão, a place with an extremely traditional wedding market with night weddings. We started a project in mid-2017, and this project took on a gigantic proportion, making our entire market switch to afternoon weddings in the sunlight!

Because of all this, we are very proud of it, this wedding being a milestone at the end of one cycle and the beginning of another! This wedding was our farewell to the city where we lived and which we put such an INTENSE amount of energy into changing it.

This photo took place at the end of the ceremony, where the bride and groom were already alone and enjoying their moment, eating something after an intense celebration. Including the Alev Foto we have here at HIST.

Composition

For the composition, although landscape is often used to show the entirety of a place and contextualize the subjects, we preferred to shoot it in portrait, precisely to exclude the things that were on the side of the teepee and give more emphasis to the bride and groom, and the teepee as a whole. We always like our photos to have the main point of interest centered, and that ends up being kind of a rule for us, so we followed our pattern and made the photo.

Focusing

Describe how you spoke to your subject(s)

Since the subjects were not moving too much and we had enough light (thanks to the lights from the teepee), we simply moved our focus point over the center of the image and had no issues focusing.

Light & Weather

The lighting in this image came from all the lightbulbs from the teepee. Since they were all above our couple, they basically filled the whole area. We didn’t have much control over this but fortunately it all worked out really nicely.

Editing Workflow

How did you edit this image?

While editing this shot with our Meraki presets, we paid careful attention to not letting the lights blow out. We adjusted the highlights keeping them low to avoid this, and we gently tweaked the rest of the sliders to have a balance between the highlights & shadows. We also didn’t want to lose the ambiance of the image, so we kept the scene feeling like an evening shot.

Challenges

There wasn’t much of a challenge in this shot, just in the whole construction of the marriage concept. There was only one moment when it rained a lot and we were a little worried
