The story behind the image

It was at the beginning of Lorena and Roberto’s session and since we didn’t really know each other I decided to do a dynamic/moving shot that works very well to find out if the couple is shy or relaxed. While we were waiting for the cars to stop so that we could cross the street, I talked to them a lot and in the end, I asked them to cross in the most fun way possible. This usually works and reveals to me a little of the couple’s personality, as well as helping to conduct the rest of the shoot more fluidly.

I didn’t think he was going to carry her, but I still was already technically prepared and well-positioned to get the picture right and not make them repeat the scene several times. I always keep in mind that I am photographing real people and not professional and experienced models, so I believe that repeating a scene too many times can make them feel insecure and discouraged.

Describe how you spoke to your subject(s)

I asked them to cross the street in the most fun way possible. The photo was partially spontaneous, as she knew they were going to cross the street, she just didn’t know-how.

What did you say?

Hey guys, I want you to cross the road in the most fun possible way that you can. It doesn’t matter what you do, but just go for it!

Composition

My goal was to keep the couple centered on the photo so that the surrounding cars and buildings could form a kind of frame. I also chose to shoot the image in a portrait orientation as it removed more of the scenery which gives more focus to the couple.

Describe how you spoke to your subject(s)

I kept the single focus point in the continuous mode on the girls smile, but I believe the camera’s facial detection feature helped a lot in keeping the focus where I wanted it.

Light & Weather

I always try to shoot with the sun on the character’s back, looking for a rim light. In this case, the light was very diffused because the weather was very cloudy. This meant that I could actually shoot them from any angle as the light was so soft and diffused that it was really easy to work with.

Editing Workflow

How did you edit this image?

I use a preset created by myself to optimize my editing workflow. It’s a simple preset, I like a little grain, I reduce the saturation of yellow and orange, because the light in our country is very strong and yellowish, and I also like to reduce the intensity of black through the tone curves.

Challenges

The main challenge is to always be prepared and attentive to capture the moment. My best shots just happened without warning and I was always ready to take them.

Solutions

Stay vigilant and make sure your camera is set up and exposed at all times so that if/when a moment occurs, all you need to do is shoot.

Talk a lot with the couple, each person is a box of surprises. Develop ways to direct them, without having to direct 100% of a scene, after all, we want spontaneous photos that have meaning for the couple.
