First, we asked Reece to lay down in the grass.. after that we put Maria in front and slightly below him. We told Maria to lean back and lay down her head on Reece’s chest. We asked Maria to bring up her arm and lay her head back into her puffy sleeves and to close her eyes. We asked Reece to turn his head towards Maria and to smell her hair.
“Maria could you lay your head back down into the puffy sleeves as if it was a pillow. Now Reece turn your head towards Maria and sniff on her hair.“
Calm
We chose a dune with nice grass and a clean background. The body centers of our couple are exactly in the middle of the frame. We took the picture in a standing position in order to achieve kind of a top view. We didn’t want a horizon in the frame.. we wanted the couple to be surrounded by the dunes.
The 35mm lens allowed us to picture the couple full body and together with the top view it created a special dynamic in the picture.
Center Framed
Our focus point was on Maria’s head since she’s in the center of the image and slightly in front. Both of their heads are almost on the same line so Reece would not fall out of focus even though using an aperture of 1.8. We used live-view mode.

Her Face
The way the EXIF is written out follows the common photographic method (with the inclusion of White Balance at the end). Here it is broken down:
Shutter Speed @ Aperture ISO White Balance.
We’ve had an overcast sky at this moment so the light was kind of soft and flat. The sun was slightly behind us so we had the couple illuminated from the front.
Natural Light
Cloudy
Since the light was equal due to cloudy sky, we didn’t need a lot of adjustments. We used our CxR Preset to give the pic the color look we love. We increased the whites to create a bit more contrast.
“Laying poses“is always quite challenging! Not every pose looks good with everyone… If the couple does not feel comfortable the pose can look very stiff. Also, it was a challenge for us to find the right angle.
We took the time to find the right pose.. don’t get nervous or give your couple the feeling something is wrong. Try out different angles and lenses until you’re happy with the result. If it’s still not working out, don’t try to force it.. just try something else.
