The story behind the image

This photo has been shot in a private pool, inside a house. Actually, this shot and the others from this series were not planned at all. I was there to create visuals for a French singer (the girl on the photo). Her boyfriend assisted us during the shoot, and I couldn’t resist asking them a few shot underwater.

Directions

Describe how you spoke to your subject(s)

I explained my directions to them while we were on the surface. I just used a simple (and not really secure) Dicapac to protect my 5D Mark IV. I weighed myself down with foot weights, and explained to them before going underwater what I wanted: going slowly for a kiss, close to each other with their mouths slightly opened. I also wanted some textures with bubbles around them, so we made them by moving quickly from the surface of the pool into the water.

Composition

To be honest, shooting underwater is very tricky, because there’s no way to stabilize completely. I just know that I wanted a relative close-up shot with the couple centered, to fill the frame and feel their passion.

Focusing

Describe how you spoke to your subject(s)

Because I shot this photo underwater, I had to close my aperture to be sure the focus was on point. It’s hard to focus in the water, because light decrease when you’re steping (swimming) away from your subject.

The way the EXIF is written out follows the common photographic method (with the inclusion of White Balance at the end). Here it is broken down:

Light & Weather

I was originally planning to use an artificial light above the pool to create rays of light… But, the batteries died just before. So I had to use available light from a big window.

Editing Workflow

How did you edit this image?

The tricky part was to get accurate colors. Because of water, everything seems greenish and dark. I corrected the exposure and used some brushes and tools to enhance the couple and remove some disturbing details in the background.

Challenges

Light by itself was a challenge, to be honest. You can’t see (and manage) details when you’re in this situation, and I love details.

Solutions

I simply trusted myself and the couple. And we made it !
