The story behind the image

This project was developed in the middle of the Covid pandemic. The idea was created by Isabel from Cracha Wedding Agency to be an editorial where we show to potential clients the possibility of doing an Elopement in the city of Porto.

The challenge for us whenever we work with other suppliers is to create unique images that match our style but without forgetting that it is necessary to create for everyone who worked together. So we’re always on the lookout for that.

We love creating content every year in low season and we do our best to do. It’s a way for us to have new content, possibilities and to be able to have more control over what we want to do.

Describe how you spoke to your subject(s)

After we asked the model to stand by the window and put on the earring, we just asked her to turn her face a little to the light and hold the gift in a way that it wouldn’t cover it.

What did you say?

Perfect, just lower your face a little and take the earring a little lower.

Composition

I confess that at the time I didn’t think about the composition, I don’t know if because this is already in the unconscious, but the image at the time of photographing caught my attention in this way. I saw in the final image that the light that enters through the window will gradually show the face, hand and then the “main” object of the photograph.

Focusing

Describe how you spoke to your subject(s)

After taking several images with different angles I decided to explore a method (Free-lensing or lens whacking) that I really like and when I don’t have much time to change the lens to tilt-shift. The main idea was to “isolate” the earring and give a distorted/blurred view of the rest of the image.

The way the EXIF is written out follows the common photographic method (with the inclusion of White Balance at the end). Here it is broken down:

Light & Weather

More and more we have liked this type of light, soft and coming from a window. Of course, we don’t always get this type of light and environment where we can isolate the subject without interference from the background, but whenever possible, we use it. It was around 4 pm and the light was a little strong for the mood we wanted in these photos. We closed the curtains and also the windows to the point where the light would be little so we don’t have hard shadows and not too much light.

Editing Workflow

How did you edit this image?

I used our black and white presets called ‘AM BO’ as a base. The idea is for the image to have a dark feel and giving attention to the earring. Then I used the brush tool and radial filter to add exposure to the earring and neck.

Challenges

The difficulty most of the time in this type of method is putting the focus on the objective you want. As in this case, we asked the model to hold the earring in a way that it was still, therefore the only difficulty becomes just the focus.

Solutions

Nothing that some training will make you understand how the method works and learn from it.
