The story behind the image

It’s amazing how photography can connect us with other people who are not from the same city as us. They noticed something different in our photography and decided to take us for the big day of their lives. We always try to do something different, we were excited about the choice of the place, but the weather was not so good, the rain was threatening to fall … It was then that they decided to change all the decoration for a closed space, we were very sad because the open place was perfect for this ceremony.

Composition

Framing is fundamental in this type of scene, first I thought of the ideal position to form the cross design and then I asked the couple to go to the window. I stopped them just before they would intersect with the “cross” that was created by the light & smoke machine so it formed part of the image and story.

Other

I used a tripod with a LED light outside the house and a smoke machine so I could draw the light.

The way the EXIF is written out follows the common photographic method (with the inclusion of White Balance at the end). Here it is broken down:

Shutter Speed @ Aperture ISO White Balance.

Light & Weather

I used an LED light just outside of the window so I could have that window light effect. The great thing with an LED is that the light stays on and you can see what the light will do; unlike a Flash which obviously only lights for a split second.

Challenges

The challenge was to find the exact composition that i thought worked best with the cross element and the couple.

Solutions

I started by composing first without the couple, and then finally asked them to move into the shot.

For this type of image, a smoke machine and directional light are indispensable. If you have the chance to play with a smoke machine, do it!
