Do What You Love – Confucious

Quick Questions

Get to know me Insights
What is a fun fact about you?
I have a degree in Marine Biology. I always thought this would be my career and was shooting family sessions and a handful of weddings while I was at uni to supplement my income & exert my creative energy. 6 years now since I graduated with my degree, and I’ve never used it. Instead, I’m a fulltime wedding, elopement & family photographer and have been for over 3 years.
How did you land your first wedding?
Whilst visiting home for the summer on one of my uni breaks, I’d always seek temporary employment at a local cafe or restaurant. I got to talking to one of my colleagues who mentioned that he was engaged, and I said I was a photographer. He asked if I did weddings and at that point, I’d never shot one and was open with him on that. He checked out my work and the next day asked if I would be interested in shooting he & his fiance’s wedding the following year. I thought, why not?! It took me a few days to put together a quote after heavily researching what I should charge with it being my first ever wedding, and they accepted. That was over 7 years ago now!
Who or what inspires you?
I’m constantly inspired by people. Their mannerisms, personalities, interactions – and above all else their stories. Every person has something unique and interesting about them, and I’m forever being inspired by what I continue to learn and observe of people.
What were you doing before you became a photographer?
I was a uni student studying Marine Biology, and working a casual role in hospitality for a local wedding venue.
What’s your favourite thing about being a wedding photographer?
I’d love to say the cake… but I’m actually not a big fan of cake in general! For me, it’s the people and the places. No two weddings are the same, even if they’re held at the same venue. I love being able to capture the raw and authenticity of the most incredibly intimate and special moments in not only the couple’s relationship but for their family and their history. It’s incredibly rewarding and fulfilling!

Advice to my
younger self

What I wish I knew Personal
To be more money smart. To sacrifice and save for bigger and greater things in the long run, as opposed to many smaller and insignificant things in the short term.
Also to have a contract in place from day dot and understand the terms. To actually seek a legal professional to have them draw it up and go through it with you so it represents what you want it to, and not some person put together and slapped on the internet for free. it will pay off in the long run!
